The Sky is Falling! 03/17/2010
![]() The topic of environment has become a focal point for many people and has even become a religion to some. How then should we, as Christians, view environmental issues? Remember Chicken Little? While it is a fictional story, it seems to be coming to reality in our culture, or so the left wing liberals would lead us to believe. Like Chicken Little (or should we say, “Chicken Liberal.”) they are running around screaming about what they think will be the next huge disaster. Many scientists have already disproved Global Warming, and arguing whether the climate is warming is not my goal with this essay. I would like to address how Christians should respond to environmental issues and where Christians should draw the line. To a lost and dying world, it does seem logical they would need something to worship, since God has been banned from public places. The environment has become the secular god of the twenty-first century. Worshipping creation over the Creator is not a new fad, however, but rather an old pagan tradition, now more modernly labeled “Going Green.” The idea that somehow our energy output is causing the earth to warm, and we therefore must reduce our carbon footprints? As Ann Coulter so brilliantly put it, “To say we need to reduce our energy consumption is like saying we need to reduce our oxygen consumption. Liberals have always had a thing about eliminating humans.” This brings up an excellent point though, what is the motive behind it? As Christians I believe we have a responsibility to care for creation, because we respect the work of our Creator. Never should we purposefully be trashing the world or destroying creation, just for the sake of destroying it. We also should remember that only humans were created in the image of God, and we were given dominion over everything else. That means cutting down trees for paper, leaving my computer on all night, or eating a hamburger for dinner is not classified as a wrong doing, under Biblical guidelines. However, to the green movement they are crimes, which they would like to make punishable by fees or prison time. You know what crime I would like to see punishable by prison time? Killing an innocent baby, while it is still in his mother’s womb. Killing a turtle is a crime, but murdering a baby is a right and a choice? Trees do not have feelings. Precious children, living human beings, they have feelings. They actually do feel the pain of being ripped apart. It might seem dramatic to put the environment on the same playing field as abortion, but after an interview I saw, I would disagree. I was watching the news, and they were interviewing a Green activist. My eyes still begin to well up with tears, when I recall this interview. She boldly, coldly, and unashamedly looked at the camera and said, “I had an abortion, to lower my carbon footprint, and I would suggest other mothers do the same.” Sadly, she is not a rare case either. When trying to research for this essay, and find that same interview I saw, I came across article after article about women having abortions, just to lower a their carbon footprint. A footprint that doesn’t exist has taken more value than the two feet, so perfectly formed, and the little soul created in the image of God. Christians tend to be more compassionate and willing to help, so naturally churches have been jumping on board the green bandwagon. God didn’t call us to save trees and rescue whales. We have two main purposes in life: make God well known, and make God look good. How are we accomplishing either if we hug trees or look like hippies? Thanks to salvation, through Christ Jesus, we don’t have to worry about how the world is going to end, since our eternity is secure. Christians should be good stewards of what God has given us, but we need not put saving the planet above saving the lost. Global Warming? I would say it is going to be a lot hotter in eternity, if they don’t have Jesus. However, even Global Warming is no longer warming, but rather just a “climate change.” Strange phenomenons have been happening all over the nation! Just this past winter many states faced the coldest temperature drops they have ever experienced. My family cancelled our annual trip to the beach, because the beach was just as cold as our own town. This was unthinkable, since we were supposed to all be living on a giant frying pan! Thankfully, the “experts” rallied together and came up with an explanation-Climate Change! We can predict that warming will again begin to take place over the next couple of months. Strangely enough I recall learning about Climate Change from a song Barney the Dinosaur taught, only he called them seasons. Environmental issues have now become more marketing propaganda rather than an actual crisis. I spent a good chunk of my life at the grocery store trying to find a laundry detergent that hadn’t gone green yet. Regular light bulbs are being replaced by crazy and more dangerous alternatives, and if they even think about targeting my aerosol hairspray, there will be trouble. There are some perks to the natural lifestyle such as more organic food choices and healthier hygiene products. There is nothing wrong with wanting to live a more natural and healthier lifestyle, to take care of your body. After all, our body is the temple of God. That is much different than driving a Prius and only showering once a week, things which could ultimately harm your body or others around you. Be warned, persecution will come to those who choose not to be green. As Ann Coulter said, “Heretics would be burnt at the stake if Liberals could figure out how to do it in a "carbon neutral" way.” Give it time; I am sure they will think of a way. If there were one thing that sums up how Christians should view environmental issues, I would say look at Genesis 8:22. “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” As Christians we have a God that created the whole world, is He not big enough to control it? Let’s stop looking to worship the creation and focus on living for the Creator. CommentsKimmie 03/17/2010 19:56
I as a Christain never REALLY new how I should rightfully believe in the whole carbon footprint stuff, I now know how and deep inside believed that, I was very shock and almost in tears whan I read about the women getting an abortion just to help her carbon footprint. I didn't know what to think, I have never put plant creation over human creation, and I thank you for putting stuff like this out there you may just help those falling than again you might just change a heart thank you. Thank you, Kimmie. :) I did cry and still am moved to tears that women would kill their precious babies over an issue that doesn't even exist. It is always my prayer that God is able to use what I write to help others in some way, so thank you for your encouraging word. :) John 03/17/2010 23:35
